Chapter 21

Victoria Lawrence

“Who do you keep getting messages from?” I asked Ka’ala. Every few minutes, she would look down at her tablet, type a sentence or two, then look back up again. I didn’t mind, but my curiosity was winning.

She looked up at me with some false innocence. “Hmm?”

I glanced down at her tablet as it lit up again. “Who are you talking to?”

“Oh, no one. Just a classmate.”

“It’s Taruk, isn’t it?”

She nodded. “It’s Taruk.”

I moved my food around my plate with my fork. “And how is he doing?”

“He’s fine.”

“What are you guys talking about?”

“The stuff we’d be talking about if we were all sitting together.”

I frowned.

“Lawrence, I’m sorry. You seem to have a serious reason for avoiding Klaso, and even Taruk agreed it was legitimate. I just don’t understand what could be bad enough to break up over, but somehow you’re both not mad at each other.”

That wasn’t strictly true. I was furious, but I was also trying to be a mature adult about it. I ran a hand through my hair. “It’s just that…” How could I put it without giving up Klaso’s secret? “It’s a bit of a long story, but I guess I realized I was more serious about our relationship than he was. And it really disappointed me he didn’t feel that same way.”

“I thought you said it was mutual.”

“Sort of mutual. If he isn’t planning on being with me after our time at the academy, then I don’t want to be with him at the academy.”

“That was the plan? You really wanted to make your relationship long term?”

I frowned. “Well, yeah.” What else was the point of a relationship?

“No, I mean, that’s great. I just didn’t realize how serious it was.”

“Well, that was the problem, wasn’t it? It was serious for me. I was trying to make a plan for us, just to find out he really didn’t have any intention of our relationship lasting longer than this. It… it kinda felt like I was just a convenient… lay.”

“I suppose you know him better than I do, but I’m surprised to hear that. He really doesn’t seem like that type.”

I nodded. “I didn’t think he was the type, either. But I’m not going to waste time with a relationship with a person who can’t do it long term. It’s like, what would be the point, you know?”

“Sex,” Ka’ala answered with a straight face.

I looked down. “Oh, well, I guess there’s that.”

“You wouldn’t be up for just a short, physical relationship with him? You two seemed to work really well together. There was so much intensity there.”

“I don’t see how I can just go back to that after everything that happened. Besides, I’m really happy to be focusing on just school again.”

She nodded and looked towards the table of Mostris. I had been avoiding even turning my head in that direction, even though I could practically feel Strator’s presence.

“If you wanted to sit with them or something, I’d be fine with that. I know they’re your friends, too.
